Many people across India would be familiar with the iconic stores – KidsKemp, Big KidsKemp and Kemp Fort. These mega stores had created a stir when they opened in Bangalore. No one had seen anything of this grandeur and scale in India. Nothing short of being places of ‘tourist interests’, they took India by storm. They were the brainchild of Ravi Melwani – an equally iconic entrepreneur. And while some of us may be familiar with Ravi Melwani, the ‘successful businessman’, most of us know little about him as a person. And very few people would know him like his ‘extended family’ does.
Appu is a part of Ravi Melwani’s extended family. Appu was abandoned by his brothers when he was in his late teens. Physically and mentally challenged, Appu was rescued from the Majestic Bus Stand in Bangalore. Unable to express himself, unable to walk, hungry, unkempt, he was found in a very sad condition. It was a heart wrenching sight. One cannot but shudder to think of what could have happened to Appu had he not received the timely help he did. Because of the efforts of Ravi Melwani, Appu was brought to one of the charitable homes established by Ravi Melwani. Needless to say, he was given medical attention, but more than that, he was treated with respect, dignity and given love and care. The kindness he received from Ravi Melwani transformed him.
It goes without saying that Appu has come a long way. He smiles, he is cheerful. He knows he is safe and in good hands. Today, Appu and Ravi Melwani share a special bond. Appu often spends time with Ravi Melwani and it is heartwarming – so much can be said without words.
It is these residents of Ravi Melwani’s charitable homes that constitute Ravi Melwani’s extended family. Hundreds of abandoned, abused, poverty-stricken people have found a haven in these homes, thanks to Ravi Melwani. They are able to live with dignity, security, with Love – like a family.
