12,000 sq ft of shopping space. Fabulous merchandise. Variety. Quality. Personal service. Mini fountains. Waterfalls. Fishponds. Moppets. Larger than life birds and bees. Whacky costume characters. Mickey Mouse. Donald Duck. The works! Well, what do we have here? A shopaholic’s dream come true – a shopper’s paradise!
And that’s what Ravi Melwani created when he opened the doors of The Big Kids Kemp Store on M.G.Road in December 1990. Not only did the grandiose, fantabulous store sent Bangalore into a tizzy, a frenzy, but it also caught the imagination of an entire country. The scale and the magnitude of the store was unheard of. The concept of making shopping fun and entertaining was novel. The result? Queues of intrigued visitors, happy shoppers, smiling children. And not to forget – fascinated tourists.
The brainchild of Ravi Melwani, Big Kids Kemp had people hooked. It became a hotspot destination, a must- see, must-experience kind of a place. Even travellers in transit, heading to small towns tucked in the Nilgiris, couldn’t help but make a dash to shop for clothes before retiring, as recluses, into those colonial cottages.
Big Kids Kemp changed the way Bangalore shopped and went on to create a retail experience that no one can ever forget. Thanks to the enterprising spirit of Ravi Melwani, Bangalore has a retaillegacy to be proud of!
